The widow?!

So, I was promised to read a psychological thriller about a widow of a man who was found guilty of kidnapping and killing a young girl. And all about how she was protecting him unknowing the truth, or refusing to find it, about his sick mind. That was a promise the book cover gave me. But as you are not receiving all you desire, the book is 10% of that. Eh, at least it wasn’t too boring…. or was it? The widow – Fiona Barton

As I was reading the first chapters, I realized I already knew what happened, who was the killer, and mostly what was the widow’s role in all of this. The rest of the book was more about how the police found out, how he died, how the reporters jumped in with their articles ruining lives on each side, how she, the widow, tried to hide herself from all of them, wishing this will all end eventually and she will come back to a normal life.

But even so, the book is keeping you there, between its pages, trying to capture your mind and soul, just like a TV show where you are about to see what a famous family is acting behind the fancy and rigid faces they are showing you in public. Is not something you are dying to see, but you are curious. Secret lives exposed? Well, hell yeah, we are going to watch that!

It’s not a thriller, not even close. Suspense? Nope, not in this one. You can’t say it has suspense when by the first pages you know the end of the book and all about what happened. It has a scrap of a mix between psychological and mystery genre. Mystery qualifying only by reading the widow’s thoughts. Although I think it would’ve been better if the book was from the husband’s point of view. I can only imagine what a suspense and thriller would’ve been there. Damn!

In conclusion, my conclusion, it has nothing to do with what the cover says. It was interesting to read, the end of the book is a bit touching, but that is all. Nothing too intriguing, or too compelling. Maybe the widow wrote the book cover, another lie to cover herself.

    1. Thank you very much! I’ve heard “The Child” is not as much a thriller as it should be, but I haven’t read it yet. I think I will give it a try soon. Although I have a feeling you are right.
